Variety list 2025 of the International Hop Growers’ Convention (IHGC)

Variety list 2025 of the International Hop Growers’ Convention (IHGC)
Every year, the Scientific and Technical Commission (STC) of the International Hop Growers’ Convention (IHGC) compiles a list of all hop varieties that have been cultivated worldwide for commercial purposes in the respective growing year.

This means that many old varieties that are no longer of economic importance and are only preserved in variety gardens are no longer included in the list. The same applies to new breeding strains, which are only included once they have been approved as a variety and are already being cultivated commercially – although this also applies to smaller areas.
This official IHB variety list is not only intended for the official certification process, but above all to provide an up-to-date overview of the increasingly complex and dynamic field of international variety diversity each year. It is published every year in November, usually at the BrauBeviale trade fair in Nuremberg. The current version for the 2025 growing year was discussed and ratified at the IHB Executive Committee meeting on November 24, 2025, via video conference.

The year 2025 exhibited high dynamics of newly reported varieties; especially the Great Lakes Region of the United States was quite productive in that context. Altogether, there are 22 new entries on the IHGC list of hop varieties – in detail (with country of origin):
Abis (PL), Aromatniy (RU), Art (CZ), AztecTM (US), BergamotTM (US), DolcitaTM (US), Emerald SpireTM (US), GeminiTM (US), Harlequin® (UK), Huell ClassicTM (DE), HydraTM (US), MackinacTM (US), Michigan CopperTM (US), Nobella (DE), OnyxTM (US), ParadigmTM (US), PixiTM (US), Salampi (RU), Suvar (RU), Thora (US), Uran (CZ), and ValkyrieTM (US).

On the other hand, we have two omissions: Archer (UK) and YCR 7 (formerly Satus, US) are no longer cultivated.
Two other changes have been requested concerning a change of the three-character codes: Elani from Y20 to ELN, and HBC 682 from PAH to 682 – the latter probably still pending discussion during the Executive Committee Video Meeting on Monday, 24th November.
The 2025 IHGC list of hop varieties now comprises 342 varieties grown on Earth with an economic purpose. Of these, 92 varieties (26.9 %) are also cultivated organically.
The version published here represents the final 2025 list to be adopted by the IHGC Executive Committee on 24th November 2025. The next update of the international hop variety list will be published in November 2026.
