Open day in Hüll

In bright summer weather and high temperatures, around 3,000 hop enthusiasts came to Hüll on Sunday, June 26, 2022, to learn about current research projects, visit the new vegetation hall and enjoy a sip or two of cool beer afterwards.

In the course of the inauguration of the new vegetation hall with convertible roof, the so-called “kindergarten”, which had already been handed over to its intended use a few days earlier with the Bavarian Minister of Agriculture, Mrs. Michaela Kaniber, and which will provide the best growing conditions for new, future-adapted hop varieties, the research center invited the public to an open day.

Five research departments gave visitors interesting and varied insights into the fields of ecology, plant protection, breeding research, hop cultivation and production technology, and analytics at a total of six stations. The staff of the departments were available to answer the many questions of the growers, brewers and Hallertauers and highlighted the importance of sustainable and secure research for the future of hop growing in Germany.

After the tour of the grounds, guests were able to taste the results of the research work in the marquee over a variety of beers made from new Hüll cultivars. While the little ones enjoyed the clown show by Portogallas Theaterwerkstatt, the adults enjoyed a snack by Caterings Anthofer and coffee and cake from Hofbäckerei Waldinger.

The winners of the hop quiz were drawn and notified by a sovereign hand – the Hallertau Hop Queen Theresa Hagl and the Bavarian Beer Queen Sarah Jäger acted as “good fairies” and made a total of eight participants the lucky owners of a barrel of Tango beer.

The entire team of the Hüll Hop Research Center would like to thank all visitors and is already looking forward to the next open day on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Society for Hop Research in 2026.
